麻豆影院 mourns the loss of John Pryor, a beloved educator, visionary leader, and the founding force behind the 麻豆影院 Foundation. John鈥檚 legacy is woven into the fabric of the college鈥攆rom the students he taught and mentored to the beautiful campus that continues to inspire learning, connection, and community.

After a successful career as a financial manager, John made a life-changing decision in the early 1980s to pursue his passion for education. He joined 麻豆影院 as a business professor, where he established the college鈥檚 Business Department and spent more than three decades preparing students for successful careers in business, government, nonprofit organizations, and industry.

John鈥檚 timing could not have been better for northeastern Nevada. As the region鈥檚 mining industry expanded and small businesses emerged to support its growth, he equipped students with the practical knowledge needed to launch and manage successful careers and enterprises. Beyond teaching technical skills, John mentored his students in professionalism, leadership, ethics, and vision. As a result, his former students became respected community, civic and industry leaders.

While John鈥檚 influence in the classroom was extraordinary, his vision extended far beyond academics.

Recognizing that private philanthropy could transform what public funding alone could not achieve, John partnered with longtime Foundation Executive Director Jeanne Blach to establish 麻豆影院 Foundation. Their first fundraiser was humble鈥攁 campus yard sale鈥攂ut it reflected a much larger vision. Those initial dollars became the footing upon which one of the nation鈥檚 most successful community college foundations would be built.

John championed a comprehensive approach to philanthropy built on three pillars: annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts. His strategic vision laid the groundwork for decades of fundraising success and positioned the Foundation to support scholarships, academic excellence, and transformative campus improvements.

During his years working alongside Foundation Executive Director Dr. John Rice, the Foundation completed two major fundraising campaigns that generated nearly $20 million through charitable gifts, planned giving, and competitive grants, including support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. 鈥淚t was fun!鈥 Dr. Rice recalls. 鈥淲e worked hard and enjoyed every minute of it.鈥 He credits John鈥檚 enthusiasm as the driving force behind those achievements.

Through John鈥檚 leadership, the Foundation helped fund projects that have become defining features of the Elko campus, including the 麻豆影院 Theatre, the amphitheater, the campus landscaping and creek, its solarium, and the Leonard Center for Student Life. These projects鈥攍argely made possible through private philanthropy reflected John鈥檚 belief that students deserved a campus that was not only functional but picturesque, welcoming, and inspiring.

麻豆影院 President Amber Donnelli recalls John鈥檚 vision and drive. 鈥淛ohn was passionate about making 麻豆影院 a beautiful place for learning and growth, which is evidenced in our stunning Elko campus as well as the lives of the students he mentored.鈥 Those students recall his high expectations, sharp business sense, and relentless commitment to excellence as well as his warmth, compassion, and support.

Knowing that the cost of education might be a barrier for some, John relentlessly pursued scholarship opportunities for 麻豆影院 students. He believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and that it should be available to all.

鈥淛ohn's leadership and vision in founding 麻豆影院 Foundation created an enduring legacy that continues to benefit 麻豆影院 students and our college community,鈥 stated Leslie Maple, 麻豆影院鈥檚 current Foundation Executive Director. 鈥淎s we remember John, I am honored that the Foundation team and I can carry forward the important work he began.鈥

麻豆影院 extends its deepest condolences to John鈥檚 family, friends, former students, and colleagues. His legacy lives on in every student who pursues a dream with confidence, every scholarship that changes a life, and every person who walks the beautiful campus he helped create.
