Ive been having a hard time determining what I should write about in the introduction to my chairs report. So to find some inspiration, I resorted to the oracle of inspirationGoogle. I typed in uninspired and was instantaneously given some inspiration. The first entry was of course a dictionary definition of the term which stated that I am lacking in imagination or originality. It also gave me a divine sign that I should probably stop doing poetry for my chair reports. The contextual sentence was the following: "he writes repetitive and uninspired poetry". So I guess that means no poetry this month. The next entry had 13 different suggestions for what to do when you feel uninspired. I wasnt very inspired by any of them and I knew you wouldnt be very happy with multiple admonishments concerning goal setting. So, I took a cue from the last couple of months and decided to find out what April is the month of. Google once again gave me an exhaustive list of entries that produced laundry lists of what we celebrate or should think about or even do this month. Here are a few from which I thought we could all draw some inspiration: Ironically, its National Poetry Month. So for those of you unlike me, that might seek inspiration from poems, you can go to poets.org for information on this month long celebration. Its also National Volunteer Month. Some of you are inspired to do this on a regular basis and many of you volunteered to help feed young people in our communities through the PTK food drive at the beginning of this month. Thank you for all your altruism. Anyone know why the rubber duck crossed the road? To see the rubber chicken! Its National Humor Month too! They said in their propaganda that jokes and general silliness help to increase our heart rate and blood flow bringing oxygen to our brain and vital organs. Hormones also flood our bodies reducing pain and stress. This next one brings me great joy and inspiration. Its National Garden Month. Be a volunteer and go help George in the hoop house. Who doesnt love garden tomatoes? This one is near and dear to our veterans. It is the Month of the Military Child. This was established to help bring recognition to the unique challenges children in military families face. Not sure if anyone knows this one, but it is also National Cannabis Awareness Month. Let us be inspired by the many uses of Cannabis sativa. Thank you to our welding instructors for the important work they do because it is National Welding Month. My oldest son is a product of 鶹ӰԺs program and Im very inspired and awestruck by his prowess as a welder. This is Stress Awareness Month. Hopefully you can find ways to destress like taking a walk around campus and enjoying the beauty of bulbs and trees blooming. This month is also the National Month of Hope. Let us be the ones who spread a little sunshine in the lives of others. The history of this one is truly inspiring. It was founded by Mothers in Crisis, Inc. Rosalind Tompkins created this group in 1991 when she was just four years clean and sober. The group supports women and families who are in need, bringing them hope and empowering them to find a new path. They use H.O.P.E. as an acronym that stands for Helping Others Practice Empowerment. The list goes on and on so Ill stop with this final one. As many of you already probably know this is also Community College Month. More now than ever, we need to celebrate our unique mission to support our students, in spite of the challenges we are facing. We are their inspiration and we are their hope. It is my hope that we will be inspired to continue the good work that you all do for the future vocations of our students. Thank you to you, Great Basin Community College! The following are some updates since our last Faculty Senate meeting: Leadership Council (LC) Leadership Council met on March 25th. I couldnt attend due to being on the road to Kansas during that time but Kevin Seipp was able to attend and presented the item from the Personnel Committee. For those of you who attended the 鶹ӰԺ all campus update, you heard the same rationale as LC did, for why there was a change to the rating system rather than a ranking system for recommending individuals to open positions. Most of the reasons were based on legal opinions about past practice. Council of Chairs (CoC) Our Monthly Meeting with the Chancellor was yesterday, April 15th. This meeting with the chancellor was an update on legislative issues, governors directives, and an agenda review of todays Special Meeting of the Board of Regents at 1 pm. Here are some of the highlights Written directives, concerning Covid protocols such as capacity limits, from the governors address this past Tuesday, should come out this week. The Chancellor will then send something out that gives direction to the NSHE institutions. The Chancellor indicated there may be a special session of the legislature this summer to possibly determine allocations of federal funding from the recovery monies. This may be a time for the legislature to also look at capacity enhancements at the institutions. SJR7, the removal of the Regents from the NV constitution may also be addressed at this time. The governor would need to call a special session if the current session does not address these issues. The Chancellor and her legislative team are continuing to provide information on the budget and are hopeful there will be no further cuts. But as we know, its not over til its over. She reiterated that we need to be strategic about how we approach legislators. The Community College bill is dead for now. Parts of it could be added to other bills before the end of the session. The Chancellor is trying to get legislators on board with the governors bill to develop a study on reformation of the community college system. She indicated that the 4 year degrees were/are not really in jeopardy. Dual Credit/Enrollment Task Force update. The Chancellor is encouraging this task force to slow down the process until they can gather enough information to make a right decision rather than a quick decision. Hopes to have a more uniform NSHE policy in place by the fall of 2022. NSHE ad hoc Fiscal Sustainability Committee No updates to report. Their meeting on April 22nd was cancelled. They are scheduled to meet on May 27. Legislative Updates from NSHE I will continue to forward you the weekly legislative updates from NSHE. 鶹ӰԺ Curricular Review Committee The committee will be meeting on the 21st to start the process of writing the final draft of the recommendations from the Deans presentations. Board of Regents Special Meeting This meeting will take place from 1-5pm today. 鶹ӰԺ will be giving an Institutional Metrics presentation and the other agenda items pertain to UNLVs school of medicine and engineering building, NSCs presidential search, and a legislative update. ============================================================================== Please continue to email me any concerns you may have regarding the work of faculty senate.
