One of the women of history that has always entertained my imagination is the life of a young Jewish woman who changed the trajectory of science through her tenacity and devotion to the field of crystallography. Unfortunately, this same tenacity and devotion was her inevitable and timely death due to radiation exposure at the young age of 38. She had to navigate a world and career field dominated by men who didnt take kindly to her air of cool superiority as her supervisor Maurice Wilkins noted when she improved upon processes he had been studying. Derogatory and sexist comments about her demeanor and careless appearance from other scientists were par for the course at this time, but this didnt dissuade her from what the data and the now famous Photo 51 told her. She knew the twin helical structure of the organic molecule she was studying before the likes of Nobel Prize winners James Watson, Francis Crick, and Linus Pauling. I speak of none other than the chemist, Rosalind Franklin, whose impeccable data laid the ground work for the discovery of the double helix or Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). She went on to do research on viruses and it was noted on her tombstone that her discoveries remained of lasting benefit to mankind. One of her quotes is something I hope we all can keep in mind when it comes to our interactions with others: In my view, all that is necessary for faith is the belief that by doing our best we shall succeed in our aims: the improvement of mankind. So let us, as 鶹ӰԺ faculty, be as passionate, devoted, and diligent to the improvement of man and womenkind as Rosalind Franklin was to her vocation. I ask that you use this month to reflect on the vibrant history of the women who work at 鶹ӰԺ and their contributions to our welfare. The following are some updates since our last Faculty Senate meeting: Leadership Council (LC) Leadership Council met on February 25th. We didnt have any items for this meeting due to the light agenda that we had in February. Council of Chairs (CoC) Our Monthly Meeting with the Chancellor & NSHE staff was on March 12th. This meeting with the chancellor was an update on legislative issues and an agenda review of this past weeks Board of Regents meeting. Here are some of the highlights LCB answers were submitted from NSHE last Friday on legislation related to higher ed. The chancellor has been asked to do Administration Pay Comparisons system wide. In discussions about faculty salary, Vice Chancellor Crystal Abba indicated that they are directed to do a comparison study on this in 2021 and report potential changes to the salary schedules to the Board of Regents in 2022. Dr. Rose mentioned that diplomacy is going to be key in this legislative session. She is getting feedback from legislators that they are tired of being inundated by email. She encouraged us to be strategic and give selective input on issues, especially during this session due to extreme budget cuts that are targeting the institutions. She realized this would require a leap of faith to trust the process. CARES Act monies. No strategy yet until they have discussions with legislators. NSHE ad hoc Fiscal Sustainability Committee The latest meeting was held yesterday, and the main focus of the agenda items were presentations on business services overview and sponsored funding reports. In 2019 鶹ӰԺ received $2.8 million from sponsored funding sources such as the Governors office of Science, Innovation, and Technology, the Governors Office of Workforce Innovations for a New NV, and Carl D Perkins monies. Their next meeting will be on April 22. Legislative Updates I will continue to forward you the weekly legislative updates from NSHE. Curricular Review Deans have finished their presentations to the committee as to the progress of last years curricular review recommendations.
