The first individual is Amanda Gorman, the young poet, whos poetry has mesmerized me at both the presidential inauguration and before the super bowl. In fact, I was crying like a baby at her words for those who were honored at the coin toss for being heroes during the pandemic. The pandemic has made me long for the numerous in-person interactions that we formerly enjoyed as faculty at 鶹ӰԺ. But I was uplifted by the following excerpt from Amanda Gormans poem entitled, The Miracle of Morning. While we might feel small, separate, and all alone, our people have never been more tightly tethered. The questions not if we will weather this unknown, but how we will weather the unknown together. In the past couple of weeks, Ive been reminded of the consummate professionals I work with at 鶹ӰԺ. I know we will truly weather the unknown together. The other black American that has been an inspiration for me in my work with future teachers is Frederick Douglass. Many of his writings and speeches laud the importance of education. The following is one of my favorite excerpts from his speech, Blessings of Liberty and Education. Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free. Now more than ever education will be the path to our students emancipation from the bonds of division and pandemic hardships. Let us find solace, inspiration, and encouragement from our colleagues, friends, and family. Hopefully one day, our professions in higher education will once again garner the respect and prestige that they have in the past. The following are some quick updates since the email I sent to all of you on February 5th. Leadership Council (LC) Leadership Council met on December 21st. The following items were brought to LC from Decembers faculty senate meeting: Recommendations from Curriculum Review. All items were preapproved before faculty senates recommendations except for the courses indicated at Decembers faculty senate meeting. Items from the Curriculum Review committee will now be informational items only. Article V of the faculty senate bylaws that we approved was accepted. Council of Chairs (CoC) Monthly Meeting with the Chancellor Our last meeting with the chancellor was an update on legislative issues. At the time it was too early to truly know what the session might hold for our institutions. The Chancellor continues to be an advocate for NSHE at each of the legislative hearings for education. The Council of Chairs will be meeting again in a couple of weeks before the next Board of Regents meeting on the 4th and 5th of March in order to do an agenda review. NSHE ad hoc Fiscal Sustainability Committee The latest meeting was held yesterday and the main focus of the agenda was a discussion of potential areas of focus for shared services. The following are shared services that are being considered: Technology services and contracts; Business offices; Libraries; Distance education; Employee training; and Broader areas such as marketing and trainings. Their next meeting is not scheduled yet but will be sometime in January. Legislative Updates You should be receiving legislative updates from NSHE. If not, you can sign-up to receive these on a regular basis. I can also forward these emails to you. Ive been attending the education hearings for both the senate and assembly. No significant changes from my update on the 5th of February. The next education meeting will be next Wednesday at 8am. I will alert you to any possible advocacy we may need to do on a particular bill. Curricular Review We have been meeting on weekly basis this past month and are reviewing the progress on areas that were identified from the curricular process in the Fall of 2019. Deans are doing presentations on the efforts they have taken in conjunction with faculty members to remedy the identified deficiencies. So far we have met with Bret Murphy and Mary Doucette.
