It is now that time in the semester when our lives are incredibly hectic and chaotic with final projects, advising for spring, committee work, staying healthy, worrying about budget cuts, etc. I hope that in all of these stressful situations we will be afforded the opportunity to reflect on the things in life that really matter like family, close friends, and our dear colleagues. These are the things in life that we are indeed thankful for amidst so much chaos in our society. I also wanted to take the opportunity to recognize and thank our faculty members and classified staff that are veterans. Thank you for not only your military service but the continued service that you do for our communities and campuses. Leadership Council (LC) I attended the Leadership Council meeting on October 22nd. The following item was brought to LC from Octobers faculty senate meeting: Summer pay change recommendation from Faculty Senate and the standing committee, Compensation and Benefits. The new summer course pay policy was approved at this LC meeting. This action will remove the $1200 per credit cap that existed in the past for instructor pay. Vice President Sibert indicated that this would not have any negative monetary impact on any entity involved in these courses. One aspect I noted was that next year will be a count year so departments should only offer necessary courses this upcoming summer in order to not impact fall enrollments. Council of Chairs Meeting with the Chancellor We continue to meet with the chancellor to review Board of Regents (BOR) meeting agendas, regular and special. We will meet with Chancellor Rose today after our Faculty Senate meeting to discuss the budget reduction response committee, Presidents retreat update, the timeline for the performance pool code language, co-requisite implementation concerns, and to preview the December BOR quarterly meeting. NSHE Reduction Response Budget Committee Four Faculty senate chairs will be on this committee. UNLVs, NSCs, WNCs, and the system offices chair will be at the table for faculty concerns. First meeting is Dec. 11th and it will be chaired by Regent Patrick Carter Meeting with Legislators Assemblywoman Jill Tolles (R). 10-28-20 Discussions with the Assemblywoman centered on the need for CTE workforce development which included Teacher Education. Assemblywoman said that positive reinforcement of legislators on social media could be an avenue to get an audience for faculty concerns. Michael Flores, Chief of Staff for the Chancellor and head of the NSHE Lobbying Team, had indicated to us that salary issues were generally a non-starter but impacts to students always seemed to gain traction with legislators. Speaker Jason Frierson (D). 11-17-20 He wanted the chairs to first know that higher education, despite the rumors, was not being targeted. Discussions with the Speaker focused on education in general, both K-12 and higher education. Discrepancies in funding were addressed and the Speaker indicated that the legislature has a constitutional mandate to fund K-12 first. Suggested that institutions offer suggestions for efficiencies and look at ways to partner more with school districts. e.g. dual credit paths, CTE initiatives, etc. Board of Regents Special Mtg. last Friday We heard from many students during an hour and a half public comment period about bringing back the S/U grading option and discontinuing the student surcharges. The most important item on the agenda concerned future budget reductions. Option B was chosen along with the added language for removal of the student surcharge. Option B will give greater reductions to the larger institutions and will preserve the capacity enhancement positions for 鶹ӰԺ. Another special Board of Regents meeting was scheduled for today but was cancelled. Institutional Advisory Council Met with them yesterday (11-19-20) and reported on our work in the standing committees. ============================================================================== Please continue to email me any concerns you may have in regard to the work of faculty senate. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy the short time with family and friends during the Thanksgiving break.
