Angie thanked the new advisory board members for completing the surveys for which new courses to add to the CE schedule and reported that Kathy Schwandt and Byron Calkins had given feedback as well. Stephen Theriault approved adding all the new proposed courses but asked if he could take the list to the business department for their feedback, and it was agreed that this would be the preferred action for all advisory board members. Angie explained the role of Continuing Education is to provide community education as well as contract training / professional development to businesses. The department is self-funded, and the amount of state funding provided to the dept. varies from year to year. CE also coordinates drivers education for high school students. Continuing Education classes are often the stepping stone from non-credit to credit classes at 鶹ӰԺ. This summer Continuing Education contracted with three online course providers. NCLab is offering Data Analytics and Python Developer Career Training Programs. VPAA Jake Rivera; Dean Bret Murphy; and CIT instructor Laura Pike approved the NCLab partnership, and six students have enrolled to date. Career Step is providing Dental Assistant, EKG Technician, Hemodialysis Technician, Physical Therapy Aide, and Veterinary Assistant programs. Approval to add these programs was given by Dean Amber Donnelli, and 鶹ӰԺ Medical Coding instructor, Madison Arbillaga gave her support as well. 10 students have enrolled in Career Step programs, and many are from Pahrump, Ely, and Winnemucca. Ed2go is providing a variety of courses that are similar to the classes 鶹ӰԺ Continuing Education traditionally offers face-to-face like Digital Photography. Ed2go is owned by Cengage and McGraw Hill, and all courses are ADA compliant. Angie and Dori evaluated two different courses and rated them highly. Ed2go was effective in marketing their courses by offering our community members a number of free courses during the pandemic. 鶹ӰԺ had about 75 people enroll for over 200 free online courses. Some people who took the free courses have returned to enroll (and pay) for additional classes. The new programs meet the needs for our local job markets and are on the approved Employment Training Provider List (EPTL) for Northern Nevada meaning agencies like JOIN can fund students. As a result, CE feels the department has greatly increased accessibility to community education courses throughout our service area. Co-editors, Jennifer Stieger and Dori Andrepont presented information on the 鶹ӰԺ art and literary publication for 2020-21. Continuing Education has budgetary oversight of Argentum. This years edition will be all digital, which cuts the cost of production significantly and allows for cash prizes to be awarded with $250 for first place; $100 for second; and $50 for third. Students and community members are welcome to submit entries, but only 鶹ӰԺ students are eligible to receive prizes. Hopefully, cash prizes will be an incentive for students. The editors appreciate facultys help in encouraging students to participate. February 16 is the deadline.
