A special welcome to all of our new faculty! Thank you to everyone who has made the transition to our new set of circumstances, a successful endeavor. Because of you and your dedication to your unique role at 鶹ӰԺ, our students are continuing to make progress towards their educational goals. It has been said to me many times this past year that the chair is a position of power. And as many of you know from your fondness of the Spiderman comics, with great power, comes great responsibility. However, it would be irresponsible of me to view this position as a venue to accrue power. But rather, it is my intention to honor the position of chair to empower faculty members. Lets empower each other to realize our true potential in each of our unique positions and to do whats in the best interest of 鶹ӰԺs students. Considering that sentiment, last spring we voted on much needed changes to our committee structure in our Faculty Senate bylaws and emphasized wording in Article II and VII that expresses what we believe to be the essence of faculty senate: In Article II it states: The functioning of the senate is predicated on several important perspectives delineated in NSHE code, 鶹ӰԺ Bylaws, and these faculty senate bylaws, including, but not limited to the following ideals: academic freedom, faculty welfare, and shared governance. These elements are vital to the functioning of the college and its faculty. One of the troublesome aspects of this statement is the phrase shared governance. For each of us, this phrase connotes a different meaning. I did a little Googling and I found this description from the Association for Nursing Professional Development that I liked: Shared Governance is a structure and process for partnership, equity, accountability, and ownership. It puts the responsibility, authority, and accountability for practice-related decisions into the hands of the individuals who will operationalize the decision. What I would hope this year is that the senate would be the venue for this partnership rather than a venue for the promotion of personal agendas. Our committee structure redesign also addresses this description of shared governance. Our standing committees have been distilled down to the essential components necessary to make practice-related decisions. We want our standing committees to be entities for reviewing policy and practice and then making recommendations to the appropriate person or persons. I do not expect this process to be without flaws or challenges. As with all changes in life, there will be challenges that we will have to work through. We need to embrace the process of clarification rather than falling back on previous practice because its convenient or easy. As Frederick Douglass once said, if there is no struggle, there is no progress. In the revised Article VII it states that, senate committees serve to advance the needs of 鶹ӰԺ and its mission, its faculty in terms of academic freedom, shared governance, and faculty welfare. In order to accomplish this, our standing committees will be meeting on a regular basis throughout the school year to address these important aspects. One of our main foci for the upcoming year will be the need to make a concerted effort to review outdated bylaws, policies, and procedures. Many of you are also participating on advisory groups/boards or task forces that will also address the needs of the college but in much more focused ways that will allow you to pursue aspects of shared governance for which you are passionate. Passion is the fuel that feeds the fire of human endeavor to reach new heights, to push beyond your normal limits and find new ones. Passion is the fuel. I am excited to see the variety of ways that you all have chosen as service to the institution as your passion, rather than to merely fulfill a service requirement. As a part of shared governance, its been important for faculty to be aware of what is happening campus-wide as well as system-wide. I will continue to keep you updated throughout the academic year about anything significant happening during the upcoming 2021 legislative session as I did this past summer during the special legislative sessions. Ive already sent you the current Bill Draft Requests or BDRs and Ill be proactive about sending you advocacy opportunities for bills that will impact us at 鶹ӰԺ, especially ones with fiscal implications. I will continue with updates on the Board of Regents quarterly and special meetings as I have done the last couple of months. My context for some of the information is limited so I will rely on you from time to time to provide me with historical accounts for specific situations. We have a knowledgeable advocate in the position of Chair of Chairs who is Dr. Laura Naumann from Nevada State College. For those of you who watched the Board of Regents special meeting yesterday you saw that Dr. Naumann was trying to encourage a motion to allow for expanded representation on the Budget Reduction Committee. Unfortunately, the motion failed. But as a Council of Chairs we will continue to fight the good fight and make good trouble. By now, we all should be aware that our focus in the next couple of weeks will turn to accreditation. Thank you to the accreditation committee for their continued leadership on this and thank you to those who have participated in the information or Q & A sessions.
